It may be too early to think about back-to-school shopping, but with chaotic kids and prices increasing, some early planning will help your budget. Every dollar matters!

The good news is that 17 states offer back-to-school tax-free holidays in July and August to give parents some breathing room. This short window will let you stock up on essentials without the added sales tax, which can add up if you buy for more than one kid. It’s even more valuable when buying higher-cost items like a laptop.

And with ongoing uncertainty around tariffs and pricing shifts, saving wherever you can is just smart, so we’ve rounded up the states below offering tax-free shopping this year. Some kick off as early as 12:01 AM local time, so check your state’s start time and qualifying items before heading to the store or going online!

Some of these dates have not been confirmed for 2025 (unless there’s a note indicating it is), but they tend to occur around the same time so you’ll still be able to prepare ahead. We’ll update this list when the states provide updated docs!
